USB-IF announces SuperSpeed USB peripheral development kit

BEAVERTON, USA: The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) today announced the availability of the USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed USB) Peripheral Development Kit (PDK). The kit helps promote interoperability and provides SuperSpeed USB developers the opportunity to benchmark and test against host solutions in the emerging SuperSpeed USB ecosystem.

The PDK is key to SuperSpeed USB development, and its delivery marks the availability of host solutions to test emerging SuperSpeed USB designs. The kit contains reference hosts, which enable the testing of a wide variety of peripherals.

The reference hosts are devices that have been utilized in extensive testing of the USB 3.0 Specification. It is recommended that all systems developed in conjunction with the PDK engage in compliance testing, when available, to ensure compliance to the USB 3.0 Specification.

The PDK includes two PCIe host add-in cards, a one meter SuperSpeed USB cable, PDK documentation and the USB 3.0 Command Verifier tool, which is the official tool for USB 3.0 Hub and Device Framework testing. The PDK also includes a prototype driver and a compliance driver that have been tested on the Windows 7 platform.

USB market will get SuperSpeed boost after slower 2009

SCOTTSDALE, USA: With over 3 billion devices shipped in 2008 alone, USB is the most successful interface ever, according to In-Stat.

Fueled by new “SuperSpeed” technology, also known as USB 3.0, and continued adoption across computing, communication and consumer devices, over 4 billion USB-enabled devices will ship in 2013 representing a 6.6 percent CAGR compared to 2008.

Among the key growth segments for USB-enabled devices are:
* Digital TVs with USB will grow to 140 million units shipped in 2013.
* USB-enabled LCD PC monitors will grow to about 70 million units, propelled by a CAGR of over 150 percent.
* Blue-ray DVD players with USB will see a CAGR of over 90 percent.

These growth segments will complement the enormous volume of markets such as handsets, where internal USB capability can be found in more than 1 billion units shipped annually, and where USB ports are becoming much more common.

“USB dominates its traditional applications while simultaneously spreading into new applications,” says Brian O’Rourke, In-Stat analyst. “SuperSpeed USB silicon vendors hope to open up the number of applications, hence increasing the potential for device interaction and enlarging the USB ecosystem.”

USB market will get SuperSpeed boost after slower 2009

SCOTTSDALE, USA: Although the global recession will prompt a slight decline in USB-enabled device shipments this year, next-generation “SuperSpeed” technology will fuel the market over the next several years, reports In-Stat.

SuperSpeed, USB’s new incarnation, will deliver 5Gbps, a ten-fold improvement over high-speed USB. With the late 2008 introduction of SuperSpeed, the question is not whether it will be successful, but how successful it will be.

“All PCs, and most PC peripherals have transitioned from full-speed to high-speed. Most of these devices will eventually transition to SuperSpeed, the only issue is the speed of the transition,” says Brian O’Rourke, In-Stat analyst. “For PC peripheral devices, the key will be how quickly SuperSpeed is integrated into the application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and microcontrollers that are the brains of these devices.”

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:
* With over three billion devices shipped in 2008 alone, USB is the most successful interface ever. It has been broadly adopted across PCs, PC peripherals, consumer electronics (CE), communications and automotive devices.
* Consumer electronics devices with USB will rise at a 6.6 percent CAGR between 2008 and 2013.
* Although mini-USB ports have not made significant progress as a connector on mobile phones, micro-USB ports are expected to become the dominant standard for connectors in mobile phones by 2013.
* USB in computer mice will remain the single highest volume PC peripheral category.
* SuperSpeed USB will represent over 25 percent of the USB market by 2013.

First SuperSpeed USB interoperability demonstrated

TOKYO, JAPAN: At the USB Implementers Forum SuperSpeed USB Developers Conference, multiple companies demonstrated interoperable prototype hosts and devices, furthering significant market momentum for SuperSpeed USB.

Companies including Fresco Logic, Fujitsu Microelectronics Ltd, LucidPort Technology and NEC Electronics showcased interoperable prototype PC hosts and peripheral devices using prototype software from Intel to seamlessly transport SuperSpeed USB traffic. Today marked the first public SuperSpeed USB interoperability demonstration, using PC hosts and storage devices from multiple companies.

The USB 3.0 specification was completed and released in November 2008, marking the beginning of SuperSpeed USB product development efforts. SuperSpeed USB brings significant power and performance enhancements to the popular USB standard while offering backward compatibility with billions of USB-enabled PCs and peripheral devices currently in the market.

Delivering data transfer rates up to 10x faster than Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) as well as optimized power management, SuperSpeed USB is the next generation of ubiquitous USB technology.

“The fact that companies are already demonstrating interoperable SuperSpeed USB solutions underscores the intense interest and market need for this technology,” said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF president and chairman. “The combination of market-leading data transfer speeds, improved power efficiency and backward compatibility with the billions of USB devices has resulted in excitement from silicon vendors, electronics manufacturers and consumers alike.”

SuperSpeed USB demonstrations at the event included a Fresco Logic prototype PC host working with a mass storage device from Fujitsu. In another demonstration, NEC Electronics Corporation featured a PC host transferring data to a mass storage device from LucidPort. The USB-IF anticipates SuperSpeed USB products will be available for consumers to purchase in early 2010.

“SuperSpeed USB comes at a time when larger data files and improved device storage capabilities demand faster data-transfer technologies,” said Shane Rau, Program Director of IDC’s Computing, Networking, and Storage Semiconductors Group. “IDC forecasts that SuperSpeed USB, with 10x the theoretical maximum transfer speed of USB 2.0 and improved power management capabilities, will ship in 45 percent of mobile PCs in 2012."

The SuperSpeed USB Developers Conference provides attendees with an opportunity to hear directly from the creators of the USB 3.0 specification. Keynote speakers will address the new SuperSpeed USB architecture, performance enhancements and power efficiency and what that means for companies developing SuperSpeed USB solutions.
