Green computing sector to reach $223.7bn in 2013: NextGen Research

OYSTER BAY, USA: A green computer/server is one that is built from eco-friendly materials, features low power consumption and Computer Power Management (CPM) capabilities, has fewer and smaller component parts and generates less heat than previous models, and ultimately is responsible for the emission of less C02 into the atmosphere.

A wholly green product will be packaged in recyclable materials and, at the end of its useful life cycle, will be traded in to the manufacturer or to another organization that will reuse and/or recycle the equipment, rather than dumping it into a landfill.

The goal of producing a 100 percent wholly-green-from-inception-to-production-to-end-of-lifecycle PC, notebook computer, monitor and server hardware is not fully realized, and will not be for years to come, according to the NextGen Research study “Green Computing: Reducing the Environmental Impact of PCs, Servers By Using Safer Materials, Slashing Power Needs”.

However, computer and server vendors are working to make their products increasingly energy-efficient and environmentally benign, in order to tap into a market for green computing equipment that will grow from about $47 billion in 2009 to $223.7 billion in 2013.

The study’s author, Laura DiDio, notes that all the hardware vendors competing in the computing equipment sectors share the common philosophy that “green desktop and server hardware is good for the planet, and what’s good for the planet is good for business.” They’re also motivated by a lengthening list of legislative initiatives that regulate everything from component materials, manufacturing guidelines, green building codes, and carbon emissions to disposal and recycling efforts.

As the recession ebbs and the economy strengthens, the burgeoning global green PC and server hardware market will be spurred by a number of key trends, which include growing electrical demand; constraints on corporate data space, power requirements and costs; and a lower cost of ownership for green computing products that can help cost-constrained corporations keep more green in their wallets over the long term.

Ms. DiDio also notes that governmental and utility incentives and mandates to curb power consumption and reduce carbon footprints will help spur demand for green computing equipment. However, she says, “It will take years beyond the forecast period before all computer and server hardware consists of electrically efficient devices made up of biodegradable, recyclable and/or reusable parts.”

Computer accessories aftermarket sales to reach $7.64 billion by 2013

OYSTER BAY, USA: In light of the ongoing recession, businesses and consumers have been holding off on the purchase of new computer systems; instead, they’re turning increasingly to computer accessories as a means of supplementing the capabilities of the computers they already own.

According to a new study by NextGen Research, “The Aftermarket for Computer Accessories: Mice, Monitors, Keyboards, Webcams, and Other PC Add-ons,” the computer accessories aftermarket amounted to $6.575 billion in 2008, and will reach $7.64 billion by 2013.

The US market will see little growth over the forecast period, according to NextGen Research, while emerging markets, especially China, will be fertile ground for computer accessories.

Observes NextGen Research research director Larry Fisher, buying new accessories rather than replacing computer systems is “not unlike clothes shopping. You may not want to buy a whole new suit or a new dress when money is tight, but a new tie or a new necklace can help create the appearance of a totally new ensemble.”

Fisher notes that businesses and consumers alike are looking for accessories that support their mobility without sacrificing power, and which allow them to stay in touch with the home office and the home.

Accessories vendors hope to take advantage of strong growth in the burgeoning netbooks category by offering wireless devices that expand the ease of use of these smaller computers, as well as devices that connect these mobile devices to home systems.

An aftermarket PC accessories category that stands out is gaming controllers; manufacturers report strong sales as consumers respond to the recession by turning to stay-at-home gaming as an alternative to more expensive out-of-home activities.

Similarly, vendors of wireless connective devices that link computers, TVs, and audio equipment report that they are seeing breakthroughs as a result of consumers’ search for stay-at-home entertainment options. This trend is likely to continue.

Not all the news is positive, however. Traditional input devices such as mice and keyboards are seeing pressure from touchscreen monitors that allow users to perform many of the input tasks of those devices. “Manufacturers insist there will always be a need for the keyboard but don’t seem as adamant about mice, except in the gaming category,” Fisher said.

Green PCs market will exceed $190 billion by 2013

OYSTER BAY, USA: Personal computers and servers are power hogs that exacerbate growing electrical consumption trends, which results in increased pollution. In addition to the products themselves, the inefficient manufacturing and packaging of these products also adversely impacts the environment by using toxic substances, and/or by not taking advantage of reusable or recycled materials.

The toxic substances used find their way into landfills around the globe (particularly in developing countries in Africa and Eastern Europe), where they can seep into the atmosphere and the ground water supply, creating potential health hazards for humans, animals and plant life.

According to a new study by NextGen Research, “Green Computing: Reducing the Environmental Impact of PCs, Servers By Using Safer Materials, Slashing Power” computer and server vendors are making their products increasingly green.

The newest equipment consumes less electricity than legacy hardware; toxic substances once used in their construction have been replaced with more environmentally friendly materials; and most vendors will take their products back at end of life cycle for reuse/recycling.

As a result, purchases of green desktop and notebook computers and netbooks will grow from less than a sixth ($37 billion) of the $249-billion PC market in 2009, to nearly two-thirds (more than $190 billion) of the $323-billion PC market in 2013.

Servers and data centers also are becoming increasingly green, observes the study’s author, analyst Laura DiDio. “There are practical reasons spurring OEM hardware vendors and their corporate customers to invest in green hardware technologies: vendors want to make money, and corporate enterprises want to save money.

That’s why top-tier desktop and server vendors like such as HP and IBM are introducing new, more-efficient servers that run cooler, consume less power, and still deliver the processing power needed to satisfy the demands of even the most compute-intensive data centers.”

Ms. DiDio notes: “Contrary to popular misconception, a conversion to green PCs and servers does not have to take a big bite out of cash-constrained corporations’ capital budgets. Hardware and semiconductor vendors are building more environmentally friendly chips and hardware that offer better performance, consume less power, run cooler and are competitively priced.”

A properly planned migration to green PCs and servers, she says, “can lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by 20-50 percent and allow companies to realize ROI within the first year.”
