NEW DELHI, INDIA: Seagate Technology began global shipments of the world’s fastest, largest-capacity mainstream desktop hard drive – Barracuda XT, a 7200RPM product featuring 2TB of storage capacity and a blazing fast Serial ATA (SATA) 6Gb/second interface.
The 3.5-inch desktop drive, the industry’s first to feature a SATA 6Gb/s interface, meets the capacity demands of gaming, digital video-environments and other storage-hungry desktop computing applications while delivering the highest performance in its class.
The introduction of the Barracuda XT drive marks the shift to the next generation of desktop computing speed as Seagate doubles the storage bandwidth of current computers.
“Capacity and performance remain the defining attributes of hard drives for PC gamers, digital multimedia content developers and many other customers requiring high-end systems at home and in the office,” said Dave Mosley, executive vice president of Sales and Marketing at Seagate. “Seagate is meeting these requirements with the first 7200RPM desktop hard drive to combine 2TB of storage capacity with the fastest Serial ATA interface to date.”
The Barracuda XT product, a four-platter drive featuring an areal density of 368 Gigabits per square inch, delivers the highest performance –- burst speeds of up to 6 Gigabits per second –- for all PC applications, maintains backward compatibility with the SATA 3Gb/second and SATA 1.5Gb/second interfaces, and uses the same cables and connectors as previous SATA generations to ease integration.
The hard drive’s SATA 6Gb/s interface enables system builders using SATA 6Gb/s drive controllers to build high-performance desktop PCs, full-tilt gaming rigs, and home and small business servers, and its 64MB cache optimizes burst performance and data transfer speeds.

Western Digital could lead HDD market in 2009
NEW TRIPOLI, USA: Hard disk drive (HDD) manufacturers are repositioning themselves in this Great Recession, which will impact market share leadership in 2009, according to the report: “The Hard Disk Drive Industry: Market Analysis and Processing Trends”, recently published by The Information Network.
We pointed out in a press release of February 18, 2009 that Toshiba would move into first place in 2.5-inch hard drive with purchase of Fujitsu’s business. Now, two quarters later Western Digital could move into first place in the overall HDD business for calendar year 2009 on a unit basis.

“The market for 2009 is about product mix,” noted Dr. Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network. “Seagate leads in the desktop and the enterprise markets, which are down for 2009, while Western Digital has focused on non-desktop applications, primarily the 2.5-inch form factor for mobile and CE, which are up in 2009.”
We estimate that Western digital has increased its lead in the 2.5-inch HDD space to 30 percent this past quarter compared to Seagate’s 21 percent. Seagate held a 41 percent share of the desktop market and a 61 percent share of the enterprise market.
While the overall HDD market grew 17 percent sequentially in the second quarter, Seagate grew only 7 percent, while Western Digital grew 27 percent.
For 2009, we forecast the total HDD market to reach 600 million units, up 9 percent from 2008.

Samsung intros high-capacity 250GB 1.8” hard drives
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Strengthening its line up of portable 1.8” hard drives for external storage markets, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd announced its 250 Gigabyte (GB) 1.8 inch hard disk drive, the Spinpoint N3U, which incorporates a native USB controller on its PCB.
This optimized design results in a smaller foot print, less power consumption and optimized performance, which is ideal for portable external storage devices. The Spinpoint N3U stores up to 125 Gigabytes per platter for a total 250GB data storage capacity.
Most external hard drives require the addition of a bridge circuit board to convert the hard drive’s PATA interface into a USB interface. Samsung’s N3U drive, however, uses a native USB interface and as such does not require this bridge board.
“The new high-capacity 1.8” 250GB drive enhances Samsung’s product offerings and is ideal for consumers who require a small form factor, high capacity data storage,” said Choel-Hee Lee, vice president of marketing Storage System Division, Samsung Electronics. “It is easy to carry around and it is designed to withstand a free fall drop of up to 50 centimeters and be resistant to a maximum shock incident of up to 1500G.”
As a native USB interface device, the Spinpoint N3U eliminates possible points of failure due to loose cable connections and optimizes performance by eliminating the interrupt service time for the bridge board to convert PATA to USB signals. And the N3U 1.8” drive also consumes about 40 percent less power than a 2.5” hard drive of an equivalent capacity.
Samsung now ships industry leading areal density levels for all of its hard disk form factor products with up to 1.5 Terabyte for 3.5” drives, 500GB for 2.5” drives and 250GB for 1.8” drives.
The Spinpoint N3U comes in 120-, 160-, 200- and 250-GB capacities, the disk rotation speed is 3600rpm, and it supports a USB 2.0 interface. The drives are equipped with an 8MB cache memory. Initial shipments to OEMs are scheduled from mid-July with a MSRP at $199.00.
