TAIPEI, TAIWAN: Solid-State Disk (SSD) has been widely applied in military and industry products. With the beginning of adoption by PC, SSD soon expanded its applications to various consumer electronics.
Although the lower acceptance in low-price PC and boosting NAND Flash price since 2008 has slowed its growing momentum, SSD is still perceived as a potential product, says DRAMeXchange.
Many vendors introduced new SSD products aggressively at Taipei Computex 2009. Kingston has launched Now M and SSD Now E SSD series for commercial PC and servers. The characteristics are their effective read/write and I/O performance.
The write speed for Now M series is 170MB/s and 70 MB/s for series NOW E along with 200 million and 120 million MTBF rates respectively. Now V series SSD is mainly applied in desktop and notebook, which will be shipped in June. Both SSD series apply same MSRP that 64GB content product is about $148 (NTD$4,800) and $264 (NTD$8,600) for 128GB contents.
SanDisk also claims that hard disk stability of their new generation pSSD P2 and pSSD S2 is up to 9000vRPM and embedded nCache technology can improve the hard disk effectiveness by providing up to 320MB SRAM and supporting the writing function to achieve the system performance. Also, nCache technology can secure data’s safety under the power cut.
Other Taiwanese module houses, such like PQI, also introduced series of SSD products to the market. Based on different market demand, PQI introduced series of SSD products with different interface, high read/write speed and high compatibility such as external SSD S530&520, embedded SSD S525&518, high efficient SSD 527&S528, server-oriented SSD X-25M and SSD 521 for PATA interface upgrade market, according to DRAMeXchange.
The newly established Solid State Drive Alliance (SSDA) also joined Computex 2009 to demonstrate its progress in new technology product and future development. The exhibition for SSD products will be divided into two parts which include products for certification and products from member companies. Companies such as A-data, Jmicron, MemoCom, Memoright and Silicon Motion also demonstrated their products, which have successfully passed the 1.4 version certification.

DRAMeXchange:Win7 RC available to public benefits AIO
TAIPEI, TAIWAN: Microsoft is going to issue public Windows7 RC. The market now focuses on tablet PC and All-in-one PC but Winodws 7 won’t make a significant contribution to global PC sector until next year and DRAMeXchange expects that PC shipments enjoy growth of 8% YOY in 2010.
DRAMeXchange says, now tablet PC and AIO PC is gaining more attention given Windows7 starter edition for 10"1 netbook dosen't support the multi-input touchscreen function. The average price of AIO is around NTD15000 and it also will help the sales once the price goes softer. While the market of AIO only accounts for 5 percent in PC sector, there is going to be a lot of growth for AIO in the future.
NB makers, including Asustek, MSI and HP have launched AIO PC with touchscreen function. DRAMeXchange says, AIO PC is considered for multimedia entertainment and Windows 7 will help it’s sales and develop more touch-screen-related software in order to provide more application to end users.
As to the enterprise market,DRAMeXchange has a relatively conservative view for tablet PC because it costs higher price despite of friendly design for touchscreen use and mobility.
In Taiwan panel sector, DRAMeXchange expects that Wintek,Young Fast,Mildex,J Touch could benefit from Windows 7.
DRAMeXchange states, according to the past, it takes almost one year for the new version OS to widespread. Meanwhile, many companies have cut IT equipment expense for global economy still suffering recession. Therefore, Windows 7 will be the catalyst for PC industry in 2010.

2Q NB growth driven by China market: DRAMeXchange
TAIPEI, TAIWAN: According to DRAMeXchange, owing to benefits provided by the shipment of new projects, the NB ODMs are still optimistic toward 2Q notebooks (including netbooks) shipment and estimate that the QoQ shipment growth can reach 15 percent.
The April MoM shipment is likely to drop 3-5 percent due to that increasing March shipment had elevated the base period number and the delayed shipment caused by component shortage. Since component vendors are still cautious about increasing production under the uncertain long term demand, they would rather stay under shortage condition rather than facing future oversupply.
Component shortage is still the major uncertainty. Some finished goods will delay shipping until May and the shipment of May is hopefully to increase again if the component shortage vanishes. The June shipment is possible to remain May level, states DRAMeXchange.
The current demand growth mainly comes from China and the US market. The strong buying of China consumer market is driven by government support, and the US consumer market also shows signs of reviving. The demand of another major market Western Europe, not only hasn’t started recovering yet but even is still under the risk of continuing slowdown. For commercial market, things are still quiet.
The China consumer market obviously benefits from its government Home Appliance Subsidy Policy, which started stimulating shipment from March, and the second wave of shipment starts about in May will drive additional demand of 2Q.
According to the estimation of vendors, the Home Appliance Subsidy Policy creates an additional 3 million units of NB demand, which is a major contribution to the 12 million scale China market. The shipment increase caused by the policy is distinctive. Except the NB ODMs, the branding company Lenovo is the major vendor that benefits most among industry.
Since major international branding companies such as Dell, HP, and Acer mainly focus on 1st tier cities of China, comparatively, Lenovo has been cultivating sales channels in 3rd tier cities and has greater chance to increase PC shipment this year.
The current NB orders are visible through June, which is no longer than six weeks. Therefore the vendors remain cautious about the coming market situation. However, the NB is sure to recover and stay growing quarter by quarter this year. The desktop and motherboard are not as healthy as NB.
Since the commercial market demand shows no sign of reviving and the NB products keep squeezing the consumer market, the MB is meant to show negative growth in 2Q under weakening demand. With the uncertain 2H demand, MB vendors are now more flexible while facing 3Q shipment. Except hot season demand, if the market sales are lower than expectation, they will clear their inventory in 4Q and make sure that they won’t get hurt from 4Q inventory.
