ARLINGTON, USA: The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced that a newly-curated and sold-out version of the successful iLounge Pavilion will debut as the iProducts Marketplace at the 2015 International CES.
Owned and produced by CEA, the 2015 CES, the global gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies, will run January 6-9, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Exhibitors are expected to debut many of the first new products and accessories for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, all of which were released in late 2014. New speakers, battery cases, styluses, and keyboards are just a few of the products to be featured.
“The curated iProducts marketplace will feature the latest and greatest i-related products and is sure to be a popular destination at the 2015 CES,” said Karen Chupka, senior VP International CES and corporate business strategy, CEA. “Our iProducts exhibit area will reveal the most innovative accessories and enhancements for some of today’s biggest products, from smartphones to tablets to wearables.”

Apple iPad Air 2 largely holds line on features and costs
EL SEGUNDO, USA: With a design and feature set only incrementally different from the original iPad Air, the new iPad Air 2 carries a nearly identical hardware cost as its predecessor, according to the Teardown Analysis Service at IHS Inc.
The 16-gigabyte (GB) Wi-Fi-only version of the Apple iPad Air 2 sports a bill of materials (BOM) of $270, based on a preliminary estimate. When the $5 manufacturing cost is added, the cost rises to $275.
This compares to the $269 BOM for the 16GB version of the original Apple iPad Air, based on a finalized estimate from IHS in November 2013.
Although the profit margin appears to be the same for Apple at the low end of the iPad Air 2 line, the product produces lower gross margins for Apple at the high end with 64GB and 128GB worth of NAND flash. This is because the 64GB and 128GB models of iPad Air 2 are selling at the same price point as the original iPad Air 32GB and 64GB models. The additional cost of memory trims the estimated margins slightly.
“The Air 2 delivers a series of refinements compared to the original Air but features nothing earthshaking,” said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director, cost benchmarking services for IHS.
“With largely identical display specifications and minor improvements in most other areas, Apple continues to offer evolutionary upgrades to the iPad lineup. It’s interesting to note that by offering the consumer a 128GB model for the same price as last year’s 64GB iPad Air, Apple actually has taken down our estimated margins a bit on both the 64GB and 128GB models. The increased memory configurations to 64GB and 128GB are some of the key upgrades here.”

NTT DOCOMO releases Open Web API compatible with Vuzix M100 smart glasses

NTT DOCOMO releases open Web API compatible with Vuzix M100 smart glasses

Metaio unveils 3D depth sensor support for augmented reality

Use cases include Augmented Reality gaming where digital objects react and interact with the physical environment, accurate indoor navigation that does not require a GPS signal and scanners that can extract 3D models from the environment as easily as shooting traditional video.

LumaSense debuts world's first two-color infrared pyrometer with thermal imaging capabilities
COLOGNE, GERMANY: LumaSense Technologies Inc. introduced its integrated ISR 6-TI Advanced today at the Heat Treatment Congress in Cologne.
The ISR 6-TI Advanced is a major breakthrough combining an infrared thermometer (also known as a pyrometer) with infrared imaging capabilities to open new sensing opportunities for heat-dependent manufacturers.
With temperatures approaching 1800 °C, normal "contact" based methods of temperature measurement such as thermocouples will disintegrate. Thus, manufacturers of metals, glass, and other materials manufacturers have long relied on infrared technology.
Infrared technology allows manufacturers to capture precise temperature readings without making physical contact. Such temperature readings are crucial to manufacturing processes affecting product quality, energy consumption, asset life, and personnel safety.
"Materials industries have very small margins and manufacturers constantly have to make the trade-offs as to what will improve production versus adding cost," said LumaSense CEO, Steve Abely. "Now with the ISR 6-TI Advanced, manufacturers have more temperature sensing capability per dollar than ever before," continued Abely.
"The ISR 6-TI Advanced is ideally suited for applications where it is critical to know the temperature across an object, not just one spot," said Daniel Schueftan, Pyrometer Product manager at LumaSense. "Currently, many manufacturers rely on pyrometers to sample temperature spots across a surface and infer uniformity rather than use costlier thermal imagers," continued Schueftan.

Visual bookmarks debut in new Opera browser
NORWAY: New, revamped bookmarks are from today part of the Opera for Windows and Mac web browser. The latest version of Opera allows users to save and sort their favorite pages using perfectly-organized collections of thumbnails.
“Over the past year, we did a great deal of research in order to understand what bookmarking options people are looking for today,” says Zhenis Beisekov, Product manager of Desktop Products at Opera Software.
“We realized that many people use bookmarks as a way of tracking their memories, like travel inspiration or a fascinating article. And, since our memories are often visual, we decided to redesign the whole concept of bookmarking.”
Traditional bookmarking systems simply note the location of the page. Opera's new visual approach lets users choose a thumbnail for each new bookmark from the webpage itself. This transforms bookmarks into a collection of favorites – websites, products, memories, and more.

LumaSense intros world's first industrial grade infrared pyrometer with thermal imaging capabilities

The ISR 6-TI Advanced is a true break-through by combining pyrometry with infrared imaging technology to produce "Relative" thermal images. "Relative" thermal images are produced by measuring the temperature of the center spot with a ratio pyrometer and using an infrared filter to show an auto-calibrated thermal image based on the highly accurate ratio pyrometer temperature reading.

Connected devices driving strong growth in gateway investments by ISPs
EL SEGUNDO, USA: The global market for broadband consumer premises equipment (CPE) will end 2014 with the highest growth in revenues since 2010, increasing by 20 percent from 2013 to reach nearly $11 billion, according IHS Technology.
Revenue this year is set to expand by a whopping $1.8 billion. Such notable growth establishes a strong foundation for an increase of approximately $1 billion per year in 2015 and again in 2016, when industry takings will climb to nearly $13 billion. Revenue will peak in 2017 at $13.1 billion.
“Managing the broadband experience has become a strategic priority for Internet service providers (ISPs), with online video consumption and the number of connectable devices in the household continuing to grow rapidly,” said John Kendall, senior analyst with the IHS Connected Home research practice.
“Delivering a reliable broadband service that meets customer expectations increasingly requires investment in more advanced broadband CPE that not only expands bandwidth to the home, but also around the home.”
Information in this release is derived from the latest Home Networks Intelligence Broadband CPE Market Monitor report from the Consumer Electronics service of IHS. The report covers broadband CPE, including modems, gateways, embedded multimedia terminal adapter (EMTAs), routers, and optical network units (ONTs) for digital subscriber line (DSL), cable, and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) households. Also included is market share for semiconductors used in the equipment.
Gateways key to customer partnership
Much of the growth this year is due to a resurgent DSL CPE market, which had declined in 2013 as a result of operator investment in FTTP infrastructure to increase bandwidth to the home. However, new very-high-speed DSL (VDSL) bonding and vectoring technologies are letting service providers offer broadband speeds up to 200 megabits per second (Mbps) on legacy copper infrastructure.
Such speeds are more competitive with the DOCSIS 3.0 system for high-bandwidth data transfer, without the need to invest in FTTP infrastructure. As a result, this allows ISPs more flexibility in the capital expense of improving their networks, pushing fiber closer to the home without the cost of directly accessing each household.
The increase in bandwidth throughput in more mature markets represents a fundamental shift of the bandwidth bottleneck from the last mile into the household, and more specifically, into the CPE serving that household. With so many connectable devices dependent on wireless Internet access, Wi-Fi is increasingly becoming the choke point for connectivity.
Broadband CPE shipments incorporating the 802.11ac specification will rapidly grow to 2018, as operators seek to alleviate this issue. Total households with ISP-supplied 802.11ac will rise to 472 million in 2018, up from just 116,000 in 2013.
With the broadband gateway expected to control routing video traffic through the home network—to the set-top box (STB), to the multimedia home gateway (MHG), or directly to a connected screen—be it the living room TV, tablet, laptop, or mobile phone, then it must provide much more than simple gateway functionality.
This advanced functionality can manifest in several different forms: advanced Wi-Fi specification, home network device management, Wi-Fi monitoring, or home network troubleshooting and diagnostics. The services require software to manage them, thus driving up the technological requirements in the gateway, such as more advanced chipsets or additional memory. Such variables, jn turn, will drive growth in the market value for broadband CPE during the next three years.
The need for advanced functionality has been anticipated by many CPE suppliers and operators alike, who are adopting varying strategies to deal with this. Many suppliers have focused on software in addition to advanced hardware for both pay TV and broadband CPE through both organic growth and acquisitions.
For example, cable operator Comcast has acquired PowerCloud Systems, parent of SkyDog, which develops Wi-Fi monitoring software.
“The 802.11ac standard offers service providers the opportunity to initially leverage better Wi-Fi as a differentiating factor, but it will very quickly become table stakes, especially in more mature, saturated markets,” Kendall said.
“Internet service providers want to avoid being the ‘dumb pipe,’ or merely the means by which their customer receives bandwidth to their home. Instead, the strategic focus is on becoming a partner with the customer, by helping to manage that bandwidth, route traffic more efficiently, and monitor and remotely troubleshoot interruptions or degradation of service.
"The future of the broadband CPE market will no longer only be served by brute-force bandwidth solutions, but by more intelligent management of that bandwidth in the home network. This has the added benefit of reducing operating expenses, such as lowering call volumes to service centers and expensive truck rolls.”

Information in this release is derived from the latest Home Networks Intelligence Broadband CPE Market Monitor report from the Consumer Electronics service of IHS. The report covers broadband CPE, including modems, gateways, embedded multimedia terminal adapter (EMTAs), routers, and optical network units (ONTs) for digital subscriber line (DSL), cable, and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) households. Also included is market share for semiconductors used in the equipment.
Gateways key to customer partnership
Much of the growth this year is due to a resurgent DSL CPE market, which had declined in 2013 as a result of operator investment in FTTP infrastructure to increase bandwidth to the home. However, new very-high-speed DSL (VDSL) bonding and vectoring technologies are letting service providers offer broadband speeds up to 200 megabits per second (Mbps) on legacy copper infrastructure.
Such speeds are more competitive with the DOCSIS 3.0 system for high-bandwidth data transfer, without the need to invest in FTTP infrastructure. As a result, this allows ISPs more flexibility in the capital expense of improving their networks, pushing fiber closer to the home without the cost of directly accessing each household.
The increase in bandwidth throughput in more mature markets represents a fundamental shift of the bandwidth bottleneck from the last mile into the household, and more specifically, into the CPE serving that household. With so many connectable devices dependent on wireless Internet access, Wi-Fi is increasingly becoming the choke point for connectivity.
Broadband CPE shipments incorporating the 802.11ac specification will rapidly grow to 2018, as operators seek to alleviate this issue. Total households with ISP-supplied 802.11ac will rise to 472 million in 2018, up from just 116,000 in 2013.
With the broadband gateway expected to control routing video traffic through the home network—to the set-top box (STB), to the multimedia home gateway (MHG), or directly to a connected screen—be it the living room TV, tablet, laptop, or mobile phone, then it must provide much more than simple gateway functionality.
This advanced functionality can manifest in several different forms: advanced Wi-Fi specification, home network device management, Wi-Fi monitoring, or home network troubleshooting and diagnostics. The services require software to manage them, thus driving up the technological requirements in the gateway, such as more advanced chipsets or additional memory. Such variables, jn turn, will drive growth in the market value for broadband CPE during the next three years.
The need for advanced functionality has been anticipated by many CPE suppliers and operators alike, who are adopting varying strategies to deal with this. Many suppliers have focused on software in addition to advanced hardware for both pay TV and broadband CPE through both organic growth and acquisitions.
For example, cable operator Comcast has acquired PowerCloud Systems, parent of SkyDog, which develops Wi-Fi monitoring software.
“The 802.11ac standard offers service providers the opportunity to initially leverage better Wi-Fi as a differentiating factor, but it will very quickly become table stakes, especially in more mature, saturated markets,” Kendall said.
“Internet service providers want to avoid being the ‘dumb pipe,’ or merely the means by which their customer receives bandwidth to their home. Instead, the strategic focus is on becoming a partner with the customer, by helping to manage that bandwidth, route traffic more efficiently, and monitor and remotely troubleshoot interruptions or degradation of service.
"The future of the broadband CPE market will no longer only be served by brute-force bandwidth solutions, but by more intelligent management of that bandwidth in the home network. This has the added benefit of reducing operating expenses, such as lowering call volumes to service centers and expensive truck rolls.”

Is it a car or an iPad?
EL SEGUNDO, USA: Everyone knows that Tesla Motors Inc. doesn’t do things the same way as other automakers.
However, the company’s unique approach to automaking runs far deeper than the Model S’s electric drivetrain, battery packs and futuristic body. In fact, the company’s unconventional approach extends all the way down to the electronics behind the car’s infotainment and instrumentation systems, according to the Teardown Analysis Service at IHS Technology.
A physical dissection of the Model S reveals that in terms of design, components and manufacturing, these user-oriented subsystems have more in common with a tablet or smartphone than they do with a conventional automobile.
“The cost structure of the electronics, the use of large displays in the cabin, the touch-screen-based controls, the mobile microchips—everything in this design makes the Tesla experience more like a media tablet or high-end smartphone than a traditional automobile,” said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director for materials and cost benchmarking at IHS.
“It’s like looking at the components from the latest mobile device from an Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy product. When it comes to the user-facing segment of the Model S’s electronics, the company has radically departed from business-as-usual in the automotive market.”
Tesla teardown
IHS is in the process of conducting a complete teardown of a Model S, dissecting and analyzing each subsystem, from the air-conditioning controls, to the safety systems, to the powertrain. The initial analysis focuses on the car’s two most electronics-intensive segments: the virtual instrument cluster and the premium media control unit—aka the head unit—which is the main center stack and touch-screen panel.
The analysis has generated a list of outstanding features and superlative attributes, including:
* A huge 17-inch display and touch screen, which is much larger than the average automotive infotainment interface.
* The use of an NVIDIA Corp. Tegra 3, 1.4-gigahertz quad-core processor, providing computing power in the same league with recent smartphone and tablet designs.
* The most complex automotive head unit design ever seen by the IHS Teardown Analysis Service, with more than 5,000 discrete components—1,000 more than the highest-end infotainment unit previously analyzed.
* A bill of materials (BOM) for the virtual instrument cluster and the premium media control unit that is roughly twice the cost of the highest-end infotainment unit examined by IHS.
Display of audacity
The cost structure of the Model S’s premium media control unit closely resembles that of a smartphone or tablet because the display and touch screen are the two most expensive subsystems, the same as for an iPhone or iPad. The high cost is due to the sheer scale and size of the display and touchscreen.
“The mobile device-like approach to the Model S’s user interface represents a very deliberate choice by Tesla,” Rassweiler said. “The company really wanted to do things differently and employed virtual controls—rather than physical knobs and buttons—to take over the user experience. This approach required a major investment in big displays and touch panels, similar to the approach Apple took when designing the iPhone and iPad.”
The Model S display is some 10 inches larger than the typical screen sizes seen in many automotive head units. The resolution of the display is 1,920 x 1,200, again exceeding the norm for cars.
Significantly, the touch screen is made by TPK Holdings, which also was the first touch-screen supplier to Apple for the initial models of the iPhone.
Designed by Tesla
In another sign of Tesla’s unconventional approach, the company has conducted its own design and engineering activity for the electronics: multiple printed circuit boards (PCBs) in the Model S’s head unit and instrument cluster bear the Tesla moniker.
Automakers typically delegate the electronic design of items such as head units to major automotive suppliers, such as Alpine, Harman, Panasonic and others. By conducting its own design in this area, Tesla not only can deliver a highly differentiated solution, but also has much more control over the costs and sourcing of parts.
Tesla likely turns over its designs to an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider, which then conducts the assembly of the subsystems. IHS understands that in some cases, Tesla is employing EMS providers to build these electronic assemblies.
With this model, Tesla once again is behaving more like a smartphone or tablet seller than a normal carmaker. Apple, for example, keeps tight control over its iPad and iPhone designs, while outsourcing the assembly to EMS companies such as Foxconn.
An example of how Tesla performs its own custom engineering can be found in the Model S’s touch-screen controller. The large size of the touch screen requires additional electronics, when compared with smaller touchscreens.
The IHS teardown indicates that Tesla apparently has developed its own touch-controller PCB to manage this task. With smaller smartphone and tablet touchscreens, in many cases the touch control subsystem will be provided as part of a turnkey solution from the touchscreen vendor.
Module multiplicity
The Premium Media Control Unit also employs an unusual modular approach that leverages solutions from semiconductor makers and other suppliers.
These modules include the Visual Computing Module, featuring the company’s powerful Tegra 3 processor; a Sierra Wireless HSPA wireless module, featuring a Qualcomm solution; an audio amplifier module from S1NN; a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module from Parrot.
Virtual reality
Virtual instrument clusters replace the traditional array of dials with a liquid-crystal display (LCD), giving automotive designers more options.
While still uncommon, the Model S is not the first car torn down by IHS that features a virtual instrument cluster. Just before the Model S, the IHS Teardown Analysis Service conducted a teardown of a Cadillac instrument cluster.
Tesla’s virtual instrument cluster is centered on a 12.3-inch diagonal 1280 x 480-resolution LCD from Japan Display Inc., one of Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus suppliers. This is the center/core of the design and—just as in the head unit—it is the single largest cost driver. The Cadillac system has the same display size and resolution display, but from another vendor.
Computing muscle car
The virtual instrument cluster features the NVIDIA Visual Computing Module, an unexpected and impressive show of computing power that features a Tegra 2 processor. Considering there is also an NVIDIA Tegra 3 in the Premium Media Control Unit, this is a notable array of computing horsepower in a single automobile.
While some other automakers are using the Tegra 2 in their head units, Tesla is bringing the prodigious chip to bear on the instrument cluster, a less demanding application.

NVIDIA controls one of the largest shares of the value of electronic components throughout the Model S. The two Tegra processors within turnkey embedded modules command a sizable price tag. The NVIDIA visual computing module with Tegra 3 processor on board, in particular—the first time IHS has detected this part in a car—represents a high-value portion of the design.
However, the company’s unique approach to automaking runs far deeper than the Model S’s electric drivetrain, battery packs and futuristic body. In fact, the company’s unconventional approach extends all the way down to the electronics behind the car’s infotainment and instrumentation systems, according to the Teardown Analysis Service at IHS Technology.
A physical dissection of the Model S reveals that in terms of design, components and manufacturing, these user-oriented subsystems have more in common with a tablet or smartphone than they do with a conventional automobile.
“The cost structure of the electronics, the use of large displays in the cabin, the touch-screen-based controls, the mobile microchips—everything in this design makes the Tesla experience more like a media tablet or high-end smartphone than a traditional automobile,” said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director for materials and cost benchmarking at IHS.
“It’s like looking at the components from the latest mobile device from an Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy product. When it comes to the user-facing segment of the Model S’s electronics, the company has radically departed from business-as-usual in the automotive market.”
Tesla teardown
IHS is in the process of conducting a complete teardown of a Model S, dissecting and analyzing each subsystem, from the air-conditioning controls, to the safety systems, to the powertrain. The initial analysis focuses on the car’s two most electronics-intensive segments: the virtual instrument cluster and the premium media control unit—aka the head unit—which is the main center stack and touch-screen panel.
The analysis has generated a list of outstanding features and superlative attributes, including:
* A huge 17-inch display and touch screen, which is much larger than the average automotive infotainment interface.
* The use of an NVIDIA Corp. Tegra 3, 1.4-gigahertz quad-core processor, providing computing power in the same league with recent smartphone and tablet designs.
* The most complex automotive head unit design ever seen by the IHS Teardown Analysis Service, with more than 5,000 discrete components—1,000 more than the highest-end infotainment unit previously analyzed.
* A bill of materials (BOM) for the virtual instrument cluster and the premium media control unit that is roughly twice the cost of the highest-end infotainment unit examined by IHS.
Display of audacity
The cost structure of the Model S’s premium media control unit closely resembles that of a smartphone or tablet because the display and touch screen are the two most expensive subsystems, the same as for an iPhone or iPad. The high cost is due to the sheer scale and size of the display and touchscreen.
“The mobile device-like approach to the Model S’s user interface represents a very deliberate choice by Tesla,” Rassweiler said. “The company really wanted to do things differently and employed virtual controls—rather than physical knobs and buttons—to take over the user experience. This approach required a major investment in big displays and touch panels, similar to the approach Apple took when designing the iPhone and iPad.”
The Model S display is some 10 inches larger than the typical screen sizes seen in many automotive head units. The resolution of the display is 1,920 x 1,200, again exceeding the norm for cars.
Significantly, the touch screen is made by TPK Holdings, which also was the first touch-screen supplier to Apple for the initial models of the iPhone.
Designed by Tesla
In another sign of Tesla’s unconventional approach, the company has conducted its own design and engineering activity for the electronics: multiple printed circuit boards (PCBs) in the Model S’s head unit and instrument cluster bear the Tesla moniker.
Automakers typically delegate the electronic design of items such as head units to major automotive suppliers, such as Alpine, Harman, Panasonic and others. By conducting its own design in this area, Tesla not only can deliver a highly differentiated solution, but also has much more control over the costs and sourcing of parts.
Tesla likely turns over its designs to an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider, which then conducts the assembly of the subsystems. IHS understands that in some cases, Tesla is employing EMS providers to build these electronic assemblies.
With this model, Tesla once again is behaving more like a smartphone or tablet seller than a normal carmaker. Apple, for example, keeps tight control over its iPad and iPhone designs, while outsourcing the assembly to EMS companies such as Foxconn.
An example of how Tesla performs its own custom engineering can be found in the Model S’s touch-screen controller. The large size of the touch screen requires additional electronics, when compared with smaller touchscreens.
The IHS teardown indicates that Tesla apparently has developed its own touch-controller PCB to manage this task. With smaller smartphone and tablet touchscreens, in many cases the touch control subsystem will be provided as part of a turnkey solution from the touchscreen vendor.
Module multiplicity
The Premium Media Control Unit also employs an unusual modular approach that leverages solutions from semiconductor makers and other suppliers.
These modules include the Visual Computing Module, featuring the company’s powerful Tegra 3 processor; a Sierra Wireless HSPA wireless module, featuring a Qualcomm solution; an audio amplifier module from S1NN; a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module from Parrot.
Virtual reality
Virtual instrument clusters replace the traditional array of dials with a liquid-crystal display (LCD), giving automotive designers more options.
While still uncommon, the Model S is not the first car torn down by IHS that features a virtual instrument cluster. Just before the Model S, the IHS Teardown Analysis Service conducted a teardown of a Cadillac instrument cluster.
Tesla’s virtual instrument cluster is centered on a 12.3-inch diagonal 1280 x 480-resolution LCD from Japan Display Inc., one of Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus suppliers. This is the center/core of the design and—just as in the head unit—it is the single largest cost driver. The Cadillac system has the same display size and resolution display, but from another vendor.
Computing muscle car
The virtual instrument cluster features the NVIDIA Visual Computing Module, an unexpected and impressive show of computing power that features a Tegra 2 processor. Considering there is also an NVIDIA Tegra 3 in the Premium Media Control Unit, this is a notable array of computing horsepower in a single automobile.
While some other automakers are using the Tegra 2 in their head units, Tesla is bringing the prodigious chip to bear on the instrument cluster, a less demanding application.

Breast Cancer Charity funds new drug research at Oxford
OXFORD, ENGLAND: Against Breast Cancer is funding research into treatments that target secondary cancers to increase the survival rates of breast cancer patients.
Researchers at the University of Oxford are developing drugs that use an antibody to direct cell-killing viruses to cancerous cells wherever they are in the body, which would enable patients with aggressive breast cancer to receive more targeted treatment beyond chemotherapy and prevent the spread and growth of life-threatening secondary tumours.
Dr. Max Crispin, who heads the Glycoprotein Therapeutics Laboratory at the University of Oxford and is the lead researcher on this project, says: “We are developing new therapies and thanks to the support of Against Breast Cancer and their fundraisers we can apply this exciting technology to the breast cancer field.
"We hope to prove that this method is effective at killing cancerous cells without damaging non-cancerous tissue to improve treatments and disease prognosis for patients with breast cancer, and potentially for other cancer types too.”
With 1 in 8 women diagnosed nationwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Despite improvement in diagnostic tools and treatment, breast cancer still claims the lives of 12,000 people a year in the UK (that’s 1000 people a month) due to secondary spread, when cancer cells break off from the original tumour and travel around the body to establish new tumours.
Secondary breast cancers (called metastases) can arise in one or more places in the body, such as the lungs, bone, liver and brain, sometimes years after the primary tumour has been treated. Secondary breast cancer is currently detected using visual methods, therefore tumours have to grow to a minimal size before they can be seen and treated meaning physical symptoms are often experienced and successful treatment is more difficult.

Stellar growth forecast for some video infrastructure software market segments
RENO, USA: New Q2 data contained in a complimentary report from Synergy Research Group shows that client software is the fastest growing software category within the video infrastructure software market, followed by headend software.
They have grown by 10-20 percent in the past year while the third major category, content security, has actually declined. In total the video infrastructure software market has grown by 7 percent on rolling year-on-year basis. Some individual sub-segments have grown by well over 30 percent, including TV Everywhere, search & recommendation and cloud DVR software.
In a market that is now generating annual revenues in excess of $5.5 billion, Cisco is the leader with a 20 percent market share in Q2 2014, followed by Nagra, Arris, Rovi, Ericsson, Irdeto, Accenture and TiVo. Since Q2 2013 Ericsson has gained the most market share due to its acquisition of Microsoft's IPTV/middleware business.
The next biggest market share gainer is Nagra whose growth was also assisted by M&A activity, in this case the recent acquisition of content security specialist Conax.
"Trends in OTT, cloud and service delivery models are all driving an increased focus on video infrastructure software," said John Dinsdale, a chief analyst and research director at Synergy Research Group.
"We forecast that over the next five years revenues from video infrastructure software will grow steadily. Excluding content security, annual percentage growth will be in double digits and some segments, such as TV everywhere, cloud DVR, and search and recommendation will grow extremely rapidly."

CoaXPress camera with ultra-high resolution

Typical high-end industrial applications include precision quality control in the production of flat screens and printed circuit boards.
