New Tessera technology brings video image stabilization to mobile market

SAN JOSE, USA: Tessera Technologies Inc. has announced its new FotoNation Video Tools solution, which provides video image stabilization and video face beautification capabilities for mobile devices such as camera phones, pocket camcorders and digital still cameras. This innovative technology enables the capture and recording of clear, high-quality videos.

As demand for video capabilities in handheld cameras increases, OEMs are dealing with new challenges such as hand movement, which can result in low quality videos. The FotoNation Video Tools’ Video Image Stabilization application significantly improves video quality by removing or reducing the effect of jerks and frame jumps, at a much lower cost when compared to alternative solutions.

The high resolution of high-definition (HD) video can also present a challenge for OEMs because it exaggerates skin flaws and imperfections. The FotoNation Video Tools’ Video Face Beautification application softens skin tones and removes or reduces blemishes, automatically beautifying faces.

The FotoNation Video Tools technology combines image processing hardware and software in a single solution to improve recorded video quality while reducing demands on system resources. The hardware acceleration is used for computationally intensive tasks, with the remainder of the image processing carried out by the software. The hardware acceleration also can be used to improve the performance of other Tessera embedded image enhancement technologies, such as the FotoNation Panorama solution.

“One of the challenges for both still photography and video capture is image stabilization. Our hardware-accelerated FotoNation Video Tools technology addresses this challenge, providing a cost-effective, power-efficient solution that enables high quality – and stable – video capture capabilities,” said Michael Bereziuk, executive vice president, Imaging & Optics, Tessera.

“Our new Video Tools technology, which comprises video image stabilization and video face beautification, enables OEMs to differentiate their products while offering the full range of features consumers have come to expect.”

The FotoNation Video Tools technology for video recording is available for licensing now. Tessera also offers its FotoNation Face Tools technology for real-time video preview.
